1. What is the Booster Club and why should I join?
The Booster Club is comprised of volunteer parents who do just about everything you can imagine for the band. It is a membership club and dues have been waived at this time and replaced by volunteer hours. Membership requires volunteering for at least 4 events including Brick Capital! Please see the membership/volunteer form on the Forms and Information Page!
The officers for the 2017-2018 year are: Cindi Fulk President Sandra Hoyle Vice President Randy Murphy Treasurer Liz Kovasckitz Secretary
The booster club’s primary responsibility is fundraising for the band. Profits earned from fundraising pay for music, arrangements, drill, instruments, refreshments, competition registration, transportation to and from competitions, supplies, and instruction for color guard and percussion. The Boosters meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm in the Art room at Lee County High School.
Being a part of the Booster Club is not a requirement if you have a marching band student, but it is certainly the best way to stay informed, and contribute ideas. It takes a lot of volunteer hours and funding to promote a successful marching band program. For this reason we need every family’s participation. Being a member of the Booster Club is also a great way to be a part of your student’s life while in high school. Most of all, it is great fun!! So please be sure to join the booster club this year and come to our meetings. You will be glad you did.
2. What about band camp?
Band camp is a requirement and a necessity. Band Camp is July 31 - August 4 and August 7-11 from 8am to 4pm. Please be sure your student is on time, as Mr. Wilkins gets started right away. If your student will need to miss any of band camp, please notify Mr. Wilkins at [email protected] as soon as possible. At camp, your student will receive and rehearse music, perfect marching, begin learning drill and will be fitted for a uniform. Lunch time typically runs from about 11:30am until 1pm (this time is not always exact). Water breaks will be given in the morning and afternoon. We would like for each student to bring one case of bottled water the first day of band camp.
3. What about fundraising?
Throughout the year, your student will bring home fundraising materials. It is very important that your student participates. All funds are spent on the band and without these profits raised, the competition band, as we know it, would not exist. The sales we sponsor are very easy and everyone can participate
Your student can also earn credit in his/her student account, to be used for the band trip taken every 3 years. All money earned, however, is the property of the Lee County High School Band Boosters and is solely intended to fund the trip. The next trip is tentatively planned for 2020. If a student has funds in his/her account but does not go on the trip, those funds revert back to the general fund of the boosters. It is not the property of the student.
Normal fundraisers held every year:
Discount card sale: $10 each - $2 goes in students account
Fruit Sale: price sheet will be given at start of sale – $50% of the profits sold goes in students account
50/50 Raffle – these are held at home football games. 50% of money from tickets sold goes to winner of ticket drawn, 50% of money goes into general fund
4. What is involved with Band Competitions?
Competitions are held on Saturdays. Mr. Wilkins will let your student know where the competitions will be held. Typically on a competition day, rehearsal will begin around 9am. Students will get a lunch break, and then report back to the band room before departure. Bands are judged in different classes based on the size of the band and our performance time will vary each Saturday. Mr. Wilkins will let your student know performance times. We ride on activity buses and Mr. Wilkins will let your student know the time of our expected arrival back at school. You are welcome and encouraged to attend all competitions. Come out and support your Lee County Marching Yellow Jackets!
5. What is Brick Capital?
Our band also hosts Brick Capital – our very own Band Competition. Brick Capital is one of the longest running competitions in the area. The Boosters run this event and it is always very successful. This is our number one fundraising event. This year it will be hosted at Paul Gay stadium on Saturday November 4, 2017. We have gained the reputation of having one of the most well run competitions in the state. Hosting approximately 20 bands is a great deal of work, but it also gives us a wonderful feeling of pride. We will need EVERYONE’S HELP! You can expect to receive a phone call or email asking for help in September or early October. Sign-up sheets will be available at Preview Night. If there is a specific job you would like to chair, please let us know. We need volunteers for concessions, souvenirs, cooking, entrance gates, dressing rooms and parking. It is a long day, but it is a wonderful day. Students are required to participate. Expect to hear more about it on Preview Night. We will definitely need your help.
6. What is Preview Night?
Preview night will be held on Thursday, September 7th @ 7pm in the band room. The band and color guard will perform several selections. Delicious ice cream will be served after the performances. Signup sheets will be provided for opportunities to volunteer for Brick Capital.
7. Uniforms:
Uniforms are the property of Lee County High School and therefore, are housed in the uniform room in the band room.
White band t-shirts must be worn underneath. When the band wears blue bibs, blue or white gym shorts must be worn underneath. When wearing white bibs, white gym shorts absolutely must be worn underneath. No street shorts may be worn under uniforms (no jean shorts, no khaki shorts). Street shorts put stress on the seams. NO STUDENT WILL BEALLOWED TO WEAR STREET SHORTS UNDER THE BIBS. Please be sure your student has gym shorts to wear. Uniforms are very, very expensive and we are very fortunate that we have two sets of bibs to wear. Normally, blue are used for games, and white are used for competitions. We change into uniforms after arriving at the host school. White marching band shoes will be ordered, along with gloves. The date for this is yet to be determined. Your child will be notified of the date that this will take place. An email will be sent out as well. Woodwinds will purchase white cotton gloves. Most brass players will purchase sure-grip gloves. Percussion does not wear gloves and the color guard orders their gloves separately. Please purchase at least two pairs of gloves. If your student is a veteran and does not need shoes, that purchase is not necessary, but gloves will likely be needed.
Shoes and gloves should be kept clean throughout marching band season. White socks must be worn under the uniform. Socks must be all white – no decorations. Socks must completely cover the ankles and several inches above.
This uniform information does not apply to color guard, all color guard students are required to purchase their own uniform each season.
Each band member will be required to pay a $30 uniform fee this year. This fee will cover the cost of a band t-shirt to be worn under uniforms and cleaning of your students individual uniform throughout the season. Please have your student bring this payment with them on the first day of band camp.
